College Girl From Himachal Climbs the World’s Highest Mountain

Solan: Cadet Kritika Sharma, a student of Government Degree College, Paonta Sahib, has made history. On 18th May 2025, she proudly hoisted the Indian tricolor atop Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak. Hailing from Gattadhar village in Sangrah subdivision, Sirmaur district, Kritika’s achievement has filled Himachal Pradesh with pride. She has not only brought honor to her college and battalion but also to the entire Himachal Pradesh NCC Group.

Kritika’s Everest journey began on 4th August 2024. She was selected for the Everest Expedition by Col. Sanjay Shandil, the then Commanding Officer of 1 HP Girls Battalion NCC, Solan. Recognizing her strength and drive, he ensured she received top-level training. Her preparation included several trial camps, a Basic Mountaineering Course, and an Advanced Expedition. This intense training readied her physically and mentally for the tough climb ahead.

Col. Shandil stood by her throughout the mission. His motivation and belief in her abilities played a key role. With his guidance, she stayed focused and determined during every tough phase of the expedition. Kritika’s spirit, grit, and courage took her to the summit of Everest. She is now the second cadet from the battalion to achieve this feat. Cadet Baljeet Kaur was the first to do so. This inspiring story shows today’s youth a better path—one of action and purpose. Kritika’s success sends a strong message: say no to drugs and social media distractions, and embrace goals like mountaineering and sports.

Col. Shandil congratulated Kritika and her Associate NCC Officer, Lt. Pooja Bhatti, for their tireless efforts. He said their dedication has again raised the name of 1 HP Girls Battalion NCC, Solan, on the world stage. He also urged young people to follow Kritika’s example. By taking part in sports and nation-building efforts, they can shape a brighter future—for themselves and the country.
