Farming without Soil: Himachal University Trains Farmers in Hydroponics for Year-Round Profits

Palampur: The future of agriculture has arrived in Himachal Pradesh as Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Agricultural University (CSKHPKV) has launched a pioneering training program to empower farmers with the revolutionary technique of hydroponics—the art of growing crops without soil.

The program, titled “Hydroponics for Sustainable Vegetable Farming and Entrepreneurial Opportunities,” was inaugurated by Vice-Chancellor Professor Naveen Kumar. Addressing the farmers, he emphasized the immense potential of this modern farming method. “Hydroponics is a game-changer,” said Prof. Kumar. “It allows for year-round vegetable production, conserves precious water resources, and opens up new entrepreneurial avenues for our youth and progressive farmers.”

Organized by the Department of Vegetable Science and Floriculture, the training provided 20 farmers with intensive, hands-on experience. Under the guidance of project head Professor Parveen Sharma, participants learned the practical techniques for cultivating high-value crops like cherry tomatoes, capsicum, and lettuce in a soilless environment.

The farmers showed immense enthusiasm, actively participating in demonstrations and expressing a strong desire to adopt this sustainable and highly profitable farming method. This initiative, funded by the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojna (RKVY), marks a significant step towards modernizing agriculture in the state and ensuring a more secure and prosperous future for its farming community.
