Solan: The Faculty of Legal Sciences, in collaboration with the Yogananda Centre of Spiritual Sciences at Shoolini University, organised an Interfaith Harmony Symposium on Friday, bringing together eminent jurists, diplomats, military veterans, academicians and thought leaders to discuss the importance of understanding, respect and harmony among different faiths. The symposium focused on promoting empathy, compassion, peace and social cohesion in an increasingly diverse society.
Introducing the theme, Mr. Vivek Atray, IAS (Retd.), spoke on “Dichotomies of Our Times” and stressed the need to rise above divisions that often shape public discourse. Referring to the growing influence of social media, podcasts and short-form digital content, he said it is important to develop self-awareness, critical thinking and a broader perspective to overcome polarisation and build better understanding among people.

The first panel discussion, moderated by Lt Gen (Dr.) K. J. Singh (Retd.), focused on “Interfaith Dialogue Between Armed Forces and Civilian Society.” Dr. Mohammad Khalid said that the Indian Armed Forces have always upheld secular values and should serve as an example for society by respecting all religions equally.
Lt Col Ravinder Jit Randhawa (Retd.) noted that Indian soldiers rise above differences of religion, caste, race and background while serving the nation. The discussion highlighted the values of unity, inclusiveness and mutual respect that form the foundation of the armed forces.
The second panel discussion explored the theme “All Faiths are Faiths of Empathy, Compassion, Love and Peace.” Moderated by Mr. Gurpreet Singh, Vice President, Interfaith, the session featured Justice K. S. Garewal (Retd.), Ambassador Ashok Kumar, IFS (Retd.), Justice Shabihul Hasnain (Retd.), and Prof. (Dr.) P. K. Khosla, Chancellor, Shoolini University.
Mr. Gurpreet Singh emphasised the importance of respecting one another regardless of religious beliefs. Justice K. S. Garewal observed that humanity is one and that all religions ultimately work towards the welfare of humankind. Ambassador Ashok Kumar IFS (Retd.), highlighted the importance of placing humanity above differences and embracing values that unite people across faiths and cultures.
Prof. P. K. Khosla stressed the importance of good deeds and selfless service, saying that religion is a personal matter and that people should focus on helping others and contributing positively to society. He added that kindness, compassion and integrity are values shared by all faiths.
Justice Shabihul Hasnain encouraged people to first understand their own faith deeply, noting that genuine understanding leads to greater respect for others and strengthens social harmony. He also emphasised the importance of dialogue and collective wisdom in resolving conflicts and building peaceful communities.
The speakers agreed that while religions may differ in their practices, they share common values of compassion, peace, tolerance and coexistence. They called for continued dialogue and mutual understanding to strengthen social harmony.
The event was coordinated and anchored by Ms. Yugasha Gargey and Ms. Nidhi Singh, Assistant Professors in the Faculty of Legal Sciences. The programme concluded with a valedictory address by Col D. S. Cheema (Retd.), followed by an interactive session and a vote of thanks. Col D. S. Cheema (Retd.), said, the symposium reinforced the message that understanding, respect and compassion are essential for building a peaceful, inclusive and harmonious society.
