Students and NDRF Jawans Share Stage at APG Shimla’s Sports Festival

Shimla: In a vibrant tribute to hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand on his birth anniversary, APG Shimla University launched a two-day multi-sport competition on Saturday, bringing together students, local youth, and soldiers from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

The event was inaugurated by university dignitaries, including Registrar Prof. Dr. R. L. Sharma and Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Ramesh Chauhan. In their opening remarks, they administered an oath to the participants, emphasizing the importance of physical and mental fitness. The university also launched a new initiative under the theme ‘Ek Ghanta Khel Ke Maidan Mein’ (One Hour in the Playground) to encourage daily student participation in sports.

The main attractions, Kabaddi and Volleyball, witnessed intense competition and drew loud cheers from the audience. In a display of superior teamwork and skill, the NDRF team clinched the top spot in the men’s volleyball tournament. The men’s Kabaddi final saw a thrilling upset, with the Young Blood team from Government Senior Secondary School, Byolia, defeating the university’s Solo Brothers team. The women’s events were dominated by the Fearless Fighters team, who secured first place in both Kabaddi and Volleyball.

In his closing address, Registrar Dr. R.L. Sharma described sportsmanship as an integral part of life. “Sports not only aid physical and mental development but also strengthen team spirit and discipline,” he stated. Dr. Sharma emphasized that promoting a sports culture is the most effective way to keep youth away from drug addiction. The event concluded with the chief guests awarding certificates to honor the victorious players.
