A two-day training camp focusing on production technology and management of fruit plants in changing climatic conditions commenced today at Dr. YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni. Farmers from five northern Indian states are participating in the programme.
During the inaugural session, Vice Chancellor Prof. Rajeshwar Singh Chandel emphasized that the changing climatic conditions pose challenges not only for agriculture but for various aspects of life. He noted that current agricultural practices have led to monoculture and a decline in the use of indigenous seeds and crops, adversely affecting both the environment and the health of soil and water. Additionally, he pointed out the increasing incidents of forest fires in the state, contributing to already elevated temperatures in the hills, was a concern and combined efforts will have to be made to tackle this in the future. Prof. Chandel advocated for the adoption of environmentally friendly techniques that can make agriculture more profitable for small and medium farmers while also conserving soil, water, and the environment.
Environmentalist and social worker Rakesh Jain highlighted the detrimental effects of deforestation and unplanned development across several regions in the country. He cited examples of cities like Cape Town, Chennai, and Bangalore, urging the need for afforestation and effective water conservation models. Jain also stressed the urgent necessity to replace polythene with environmentally friendly alternatives.
In the technical sessions, Dr. Jitender Chauhan discussed nursery practices for fruit trees, while Dr. Prashant covered topics on afforestation and environmental conservation. Dr. Rajesh Kaushal provided insights on home composting, and Dr. Rajesh Sharda informed participants about irrigation techniques. Additionally, Dr. Rakesh Sharma offered advice on food product preparation. The program included a field visit to high-density plantations and nurseries, along with interactive sessions on various plant types and future strategies with Dr Vipan Guleria. The two-day event will conclude with a plantation drive on campus.
Eminent speakers from different institutions along with Padam Shri winner Kanwal Singh Chauhan, statutory officers of the university and scientists from various departments also attended the event.
