Guwahati: Supporting the State government decision to table the report on Nellie massacre in the legislative assembly, a forum of nationalist citizens insisted that the truth behind the horrible incident should come to light. Patriotic People’s Front Assam (PPFA) also demanded that any conspiracy to malign the Asomiya people as ‘anti-Muslim’ must be destroyed and the negative narrative deserves to be erased with factual revelations.

The national and international media outlets continue reporting the Nellie massacre that took place on 18 February 1983 killing over 2000 Bangladesh-origin Muslim settlers as one of the horrific mass killings in India. Those media outlets have claimed that the victims were mostly women and children, but none reported if another thousand aggressors (read tribal and mainstream Assamese individuals) were also killed in retaliation.
“PPFA questions what were the weapons used for the slaughtering and with no sophisticated arms was it possible for the locals to eliminate all these people within some hours? If the victims were Muslims, where were they buried and are there any indications of mass graves in Nellie locality of central Assam ?” said a statement, adding that the initiative to make the Tewari commission report public may help understand the real story behind the Nellie mass murder.
