Excitement Builds for the Upcoming Tour De Sanawar

Solan: The Lawrence School, Sanawar, in collaboration with Hero Cycles and the Old Sanawarian Society, proudly announces the 5th Edition of the Tour De Sanawar, India’s largest Inter-School Cycling Competition, scheduled to be held on November 3, 2024. Nestled amidst the serene hills of Himachal Pradesh, Sanawar has exhibited a longstanding commitment to sports and outdoor activities since its inception in 1847, making it the perfect host for this prestigious event.

This year’s competition aims to take cycling to every school in India, with plans to establish a national league. Over 175 participants from 16 schools and more than 20 cities, including Bangalore, Pune, and Guwahati, will converge for this exciting race. The youngest participant is just 9 years old, while the eldest is a remarkable 65, showcasing cycling’s appeal across generations.

The competition will feature four categories in an MTB XCO style, with routes ranging from 11 km for those under 14 years to 15 km with a 600-meter elevation gain for the elite category. Riders will navigate a challenging mix of steep ascents, thrilling descents, and sharp turns, testing the skills of the best cyclists.

The Old Sanawarian Society conceived the idea of cycling in Sanawar in 2017 and since then the Tour De Sanawar has rapidly transformed from a recreational event into a highly anticipated competition, reflecting the growing interest in cycling across the nation. This year alone, 160 riders from diverse backgrounds have registered, including 100 in the Open Amateur category, 20 in the Amateur category, and 40 representing various schools. Notably, the event proudly welcomes over 30 female participants, highlighting the increasing diversity within the sport.

The race will take place on a scenic 3 km loop that winds through the school’s picturesque campus at an altitude of 1,750 meters, surrounded by lush pine and deodar forests. The route passes iconic landmarks, including Sgt. Tilley’s Hill, the Chapel, and the Peacestead, providing a perfect blend of natural beauty and rich history.

The success of the Tour De Sanawar has been made possible through the visionary support of Mr. Pankaj M Munjal, Chairman of Hero Cycles and an alumnus of The Lawrence School, Sanawar. His commitment to promoting cycling at the grassroots level has inspired countless young athletes. “By offering a platform for budding cyclists to test their endurance in a supportive environment, Sanawar is setting a standard for how educational institutions can merge history, education, and sports to foster a lasting sporting culture. We envision a future where cycling is part of daily life for everyone,” said Mr. Munjal.

Tour De Sanawar is also making strides in environmental advocacy. In response to rising AQI levels in metropolitan areas, the event promotes cycling as a sustainable alternative to fossil-fueled vehicles. Since adopting a Green Diwali initiative in 2018, Sanawar has taken a lead in climate change advocacy, inspiring Environmental Stewardship and responsible citizenship among both the participants and spectators alike. By emphasizing the ecological, environmental, and health benefits of cycling, the Tour De Sanawar encourages communities to adopt a healthier lifestyle and contribute to a cleaner, greener future.

Mr. Vivek Bhatia (IAS), the Director Youth Services and Sports & Principal Private Secretary-cum-Special Secretary to Chief Minister Himachal Pradesh, an enthusiastic and avid cyclist himself will grace the occasion as the chief guest.

Rejoicing at the growing appeal of the event among the cycling enthusiasts, Himmat Singh Dhillon, the Headmaster, said, “As Tour De Sanawar continues to grow, the vision is clear to bring schools from every state of India and even overseas into the fold, making the next edition even more inclusive and impactful. Join us as we pedal towards a brighter and more sustainable future!”
